The Legend of California — First Look Trailer Revealed

A first look trailer has been released for The Legend of California, an open-world Western survival shooter developed by Kintsugiyama, the new studio founded by former Blizzard Entertainment VP Jeff Kaplan.

The game is set during the Gold Rush era of the 19th century, but not in a direct historical version of the United States. Instead, the developers created an alternate California, presented as a massive island that preserves the general shape and several iconic landmarks of the real state.

According to Kaplan, the world is partially handcrafted to keep recognizable locations such as Yosemite Valley, while many other areas are generated procedurally. Each server starts with its own map seed, meaning the layout of regions and danger zones can change between worlds.

Survival on the Frontier

Gameplay in The Legend of California revolves around open-world exploration and survival.

Players will travel across wilderness areas, gather resources, hunt animals and build structures to expand their own ranch. Crafting systems allow the creation of weapons, tools and other equipment necessary to survive the frontier.

Combat is presented from a first-person perspective, combining gunfights with environmental hazards and encounters with hostile camps controlled by AI.

The game also includes PvPvE elements, meaning players may face both AI enemies and other players competing for resources.

Persistent Worlds and Co-op

Sessions take place on persistent servers, where players can explore the world alone or form groups of up to four people.

Team members will be able to share buildings, resources and progress while establishing their own settlement on the frontier.

The long-term goal, according to the developers, is not just survival but becoming a legend of California — shaping the wild island into your own territory.

PC Release Planned

The Legend of California is currently announced for PC via Steam, where players can already sign up for future playtests.
A release date has not yet been announced.
